Plastic Surgery To Treat Lawn Mower-Related Injuries

San Diego breast augmentationDuring spring and summer months, using a lawn mower can be as routine as bike riding or barbeques. People, however, find themselves in terrifying situations when these seemingly safe household machines injure their operators. In fact, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission 200,000 people - 16,000 of them children - are injured in lawn mower-related accidents each year. Lawn mowers, however, don't "attack" people on their own. Most injuries, such as severed fingers and toes, limb amputations, broken bones, burns and eye injuries, are caused by careless use and can be prevented by following a few simple safety tips.

And when people think of plastic surgery in sunny destinations like San Diego breast augmentation and facelifts usually come to mind, however, this field encompasses both cosmetic and reconstructive. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) discusses preventing injuries and educating adults, parents, and children about the importance of lawn mower safety in a recent article and points out that many lawn mower-related injuries require a team of physicians from various specialties - plastic surgery, microsurgery, maxillofacial surgery, pediatrics, and orthopedics - to properly repair them. Often, patients must go through difficult reconstructive operations for months, sometimes years, to restore form and function.

San Diego plastic surgeons warn that lawn mowing can be dangerous to the operator as well as those nearby if proper safety precautions aren't taken. Power lawn mowers are dangerous adult tools, but many children, and sometimes adults unfortunately, see them as toys. The ASRM, ASPS, ASMS, AAP and AAOS offer the following tips to help prevent lawn mower-related injuries:

  • Children should be at least 12-years-old before they operate any lawn mower, and at least 16 years old for a ride-on mower.
  • Children should never be passengers on ride-on mowers.
  • Always wear sturdy shoes while mowing - not sandals.
  • Young children should be at a safe distance from the area you are mowing.
  • Pick up stones, toys and debris from the lawn to prevent injuries from flying objects to the face that may necessitate facial surgery such as San Diego rhinoplasty or reconstructive ear surgery. Very often, plastic surgeons see patients who suffer significant facial injuries by items thrown out of mowers like sticks and stones.
  • Always wear eye and hearing protection.
  • Use a mower with a control that stops it from moving forward if the handle is released.
  • Never pull backward or mow in reverse unless absolutely necessary - carefully look for others behind you when you do.
  • Start and refuel mowers outdoors - not in a garage. Refuel with the motor turned off and cool.
  • Blade settings should be set by an adult only.
  • Wait for blades to stop completely before removing the grass catcher, unclogging the discharge chute, or crossing gravel roads. (As a safety feature, some newer models have a blade/brake clutch that stops the blade each time the operator releases the handle.)

Cosmetic Surgery: What To Know Beforehand

San Diego breast augmentation
You've seen it advertised in newspapers, featured on television programs, apparent in the faces of celebrities - cosmetic surgery. It's guaranteed to shave decades off your appearance, right? In some cases, maybe. Cosmetic surgery offers the potential to improve many areas of the body. But as with any surgery, top San Diego cosmetic surgeons remind patients that cosmetic surgery also involves certain risks and limitations.

Plastic surgery aims to change your appearance by altering parts of your body that function normally but whose appearance makes you unhappy. This differs from reconstructive surgery, in which a San Diego plastic surgeon can perform surgical procedures with the goal of improving the appearance and function of body parts affected by congenital defects, injuries and diseases such as cancer. Cosmetic surgery offers choices for making changes in your physical appearance. It reshapes normal body structures, changes appearance and, often, improves self-esteem. If you're dissatisfied with your appearance, you may be interested in cosmetic surgery not only to look better, but also to feel better. Despite possible risks, and though each person's experience is unique, both improvements may be likely after cosmetic surgery.

No studies have conclusively proved that most people can expect to enjoy dramatic improvements in their psychological well-being, however. If you're struggling with depression, for example, cosmetic surgery such as a San Diego breast augmentation procedure is unlikely to relieve it.

When deciding for or against cosmetic surgery, consider the following:

  • Your expectations. Anticipate improvement, not perfection. If you expect cosmetic surgery to turn you into a movie star, you're bound to be disappointed. Also don't count on surgery to save a rocky relationship, gain a promotion or improve your social life.
  • Time and expense. Cosmetic surgery isn't covered by most health insurance. The costs vary depending on the procedure performed and may range from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars. The procedures and your recovery also take time. This varies depending on the procedure. Returning to work may take from one day to several weeks.
  • Potential risks. You must be comfortable with the fact that cosmetic surgery, like any surgery, can be a risk to your health and that the results may not be what you anticipate.
  • Physical and psychological changes. Understand the physical effects that may be part of the healing time as well as how the surgery may affect aspects of your personal and professional life.

While dissatisfaction with results always remains a possibility, the closer you work with your surgeon to establish specific, measurable and achievable goals before surgery, the more likely you are to be satisfied with the results. San Diego Cosmetic Surgeon Gives Patients Preview of Likely Results with 3D Video Library

breast implants San DiegoNew computer technology is making it possible to view the likely outcome of breast augmentation surgery before the procedure is performed. Bio-Medicine.org reports Nevada plastic surgeons using the latest imaging technology to give patients a preview of possible results. Closer to home in San Diego rhinoplasty patients are able to view engaging and informative 3D videos of procedures they are interested in via The Del Mar Cosmetic Medical Center's plastic and cosmetic online video library. A valuable tool in understanding how a procedure can help patients achieve the look they desire, this innovative multimedia educational program is exclusively endorsed by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Typically the first question women considering plastic surgery ask San Diego plastic surgeons is: ‘What will I look like after the procedure?’ Advanced technology is making it possible for patients to view the likely outcome of their own breast enhancement surgery before actually getting breast implants San Diego plastic surgeon Dr. Maurice Sherman tells us.

This technology displays results from all angles, giving the patient freedom to choose the sizes of breast implants to place on the 3D model. Therefore, the patient is able to compare and contrast how they might look with a number of different sizes of implants, giving them a better idea of which size they would ultimately like the most. At Dr. Sherman’s San Diego breast augmentation practice, 3D Video Library has been very helpful for patients in understanding realistic cosmetic surgery results.

BREAST AUGMENTATION BECOMES NO. 1 COSMETIC SURGERY PROCEDURE IN UNITED STATES

PRWeb reports that for the first time in twelve years, breast augmentation has surpassed liposuction to become the most popular cosmetic surgical procedure in the US. According to new statistics by The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, more than 355,000 breast augmentation surgeries were performed last year; this new report coincides with the two-year anniversary of a landmark decision from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration allowing doctors to use silicone breast implants in breast surgery procedures.

After years of intensive study and clinical trials, the organization decided in 2006 to approve the use of the implants in breast augmentation patients over the age of 22, and breast reconstruction patients of any age. And though there is no greater risk to women with silicone implants than there is with saline implants, a well-recognized San Diego plastic surgeon we spoke with tells us that there are certain differences to be mindful of.

These chief differences are the appearance and feel of the implant, and what happens if the implant ruptures. With saline implants, a rupture or leak in the implant is easily detectable as the breast takes on a deflated appearance. Since silicone breast implants use a viscous, silicone gel as their main component, a leak may be harder to detect. Many doctors in California, however, say silicone breast implants are extremely durable, and that one of the most positive aspects of the FDA’s decision is that it gives patients like those at their San Diego breast augmentation practices a broader range of options to meet their own specific needs.

For many women in San Diego breast implants made of silicone are regarded more favorably than their saline counterparts because silicone is said to look and feel more natural, and are less prone to rippling. The choice between silicone and saline implants is ultimately up to the individual, and the patient is strongly advised to consider their personal and unique cosmetic needs. Our resident San Diego cosmetic surgeon reminds us that the most important thing for patients to do before undergoing breast enlargement is to educate themselves about the procedure, and be sure to have an understanding about both types of implants.

FIGHTING FOR YOUR IMPLANTS

San Diego breast implants

Recent news has British Sarah Blewden making headlines as former model turned boxer who’s had her plans to compete in the 2012 Olympics complicated by a having breast implants. International rules forbid boxers to compete with breast implants, and Sarah, 25, who has started boxing about two years ago clearly expresses her disappointment at the decision: “It is ridiculous. My surgeon said they make me no more vulnerable than any woman. They are not enormous and they are gel so won't burst", as quoted from a British news agency. Sarah had her breast augmentation surgery performed 6 years ago.

Is Sculptra worth it?

As per some recent studies, it does seem to be popular. I asked some San Diego Sculptra users, and they vouch that it works great, especially for under eye hollow treatment and adding volume in your face. Does it work? a majority of upscale Eastlake and Del Mar Sculptra customers seem to think so. Is it expensive? They think its expensive too, but often worth it.

A few other options in San Diego Radiesse and of course the ever popular Restylane. But as per a San Diego Face Lift expert, each has its advantages and needs to be chosen astutely. That is why a great cosmetic surgeon is so important.

What is Sculptra?

An injectable form of poly L-lactic acid (PLLA), a biocompatible (will not harm the body) and biodegradable (can be broken down by the body) synthetic polymer from the alpha-hydroxy family that has been widely used for many years in dissolvable stitches, bone screws and facial implants.

What areas are treated with Sculptra?

Used for Nasolabial folds, deeper creases and wrinkles. Is also used to "plump" up and sculpt the face in areas where there is a loss of fat.

Sculptra® is one of the newest, and possibly the best filler for replacing lost facial tissue volume. Sculptra® is made of poly-lactic acid, which is biocompatible and biodegradable, and stimulates the body's natural production of collagen while it also adds volume deep beneath the surface of the skin. Sculptra® is approved by the FDA for restoration and/or correction of the signs of facial fat loss (lipoatrophy) in people with human immunodeficiency virus.

Choosing the best breast size implant in breast augmentation

One of the most important variables on in breast augmentation surgery is choosing the size implant that will be used.

Regardless of the type of implant (saline or silicone gel) and the shape (round or tear drop), the size or volume will be the most critical element in providing the desired fullness. Per a leading San Diego Breast Augmentation surgeon, patients often specify they wish to be a certain cup size, but don’t really understand how a bra cup size is measured or the variations in cup sizes.

There are several formulas that manufacturers use in creating a certain cup size. Unfortunately, there is no federal regulation or enforcement of any set standard. Hence, different brands will fit differently and even within a certain brand, the stretch of the fabric will alter the fit and size selected. Some say that perhaps bras from some fancy lingerie brands always run smaller and therefore customers may need to purchase a bra with a larger indicated size tag than they would in using more traditionally made bras. Perhaps this has been a good marketing plan for the company.

San Diego Breast Enhancement and San Diego Breast Lift Specialist Dr. Sherman has found that educating our patients and involving them in the selection process helps to create happy satisfied customers. Following are some excerpt of our discussion with him.

As a leading Breast Augmentation San Diego surgeon, how do you explain this issue of Breast sizing?

First, we explain the concept that the final breast size is related to not only what size implant is used, but also how much breast tissue is present pre-operatively. Many times a patient will tell us that she wants the same size implant as her friend received, although her friend probably developed with a different breast volume than that patient.

Secondly, I try to steer patients into a well proportioned (but not overly proportioned) final result. The very large breasted women will undoubtedly experience more healing problems, and inherent with aging a higher tendency towards drooping of the breast or asymmetry as one breast may become lower than the other. This would lead to revision surgery perhaps to lift breast. My goal has always been to create an ideal proportional body where normal tailored clothing will fit naturally, but when the patient wants to show off in tight fitting revealing clothes, the fullness and curves will be noticeable. Most patients readily understand this concept and accept the idea that “too big can be harmful”.

Finally, we ask our patient to research and bring to our office, pictures of nudes with different breast sizes. One set being the most desired fullness our patient would like to see when looking at herself in the mirror. Other sets of pictures would be too big and too small breast sizes. Using both inflatable sizing balloons during surgery and our years of experience, we consistently select the size needed to produce very close or exact resemblances to those desired pictures. While there is no quick substitute for experience, judgment, and astute aesthetic abilities of the cosmetic surgeon, having our patients involved with the selection process has been a proven successful technique to translate a women’s desire and aesthetic goals into a successful and full filling experience.
