Plastic Surgery Changing With The Times

plastic surgeon San DiegoThe American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery released its findings that for the first time in 12 years, breast augmentation overtook the reigning king of plastic surgery procedures, liposuction, which begs the question: what explains this trend of Americans getting more breast augmentation operations than liposuction procedures for the first time in over a decade?

According to a top local plastic surgeon San Diego is a city with a rich, diverse community where cosmetic surgery as well as luxury hotels, popular attractions, and sunny beaches have defined the culture there. Taking this Southern California city as an example, he says that many factors may contribute to the increase of breast augmentation procedures compared to liposuction procedures. Both surgeries enhance the figure with one adding a desirable feature to the form while the other removes unwanted fat. The state of the country’s economy may contribute to this trend. The client base becoming younger and younger also can play a role in breast augmentation surpassing liposuction. And lastly, it is possible

In San Diego Breast Augmentation Ranks High Among Procedures Sought After By Women From All Walks Of Life

As in many other major cities across the country, San Diego is home to

A woman’s identity as a feminine individual may be deeply rooted in her figure; the human female form characterized by a slim outline with a full chest and hips has been the idea and image of beauty since the arts emerged in human history. A woman’s breasts help define her femininity, and with the vast differences in shape, size, and appearance, breasts further help to define her individualism. Therefore, changes to the breasts can be dissatisfying and make women feel as if they are losing some of their femininity and youthful vitality. Like other areas of the body, the breasts undergo changes in response to factors such as genetics, the aging process, pregnancy and breast feeding, weight gain or loss, and hormonal fluctuations. Breasts that were once firm and shapely often begin to sag and droop giving them a loose or heavy appearance. A breast lift, or mastopexy, can help restore a firmer, shapelier breast, which will improve body contours and give the breasts a perky, youthful appearance.

Some San Diego plastic surgeons speculate that changes in fashion reflected in cleavage baring styles, for example, might be a factor behind this change; while this kind of fashion dates back past the Renaissance period, this explanation may shed light on this trend when we consider at modern swimwear fashion and popular sporting events like beach volleyball and women’s water polo.

Plastic Surgery To Treat Lawn Mower-Related Injuries

San Diego breast augmentationDuring spring and summer months, using a lawn mower can be as routine as bike riding or barbeques. People, however, find themselves in terrifying situations when these seemingly safe household machines injure their operators. In fact, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission 200,000 people - 16,000 of them children - are injured in lawn mower-related accidents each year. Lawn mowers, however, don't "attack" people on their own. Most injuries, such as severed fingers and toes, limb amputations, broken bones, burns and eye injuries, are caused by careless use and can be prevented by following a few simple safety tips.

And when people think of plastic surgery in sunny destinations like San Diego breast augmentation and facelifts usually come to mind, however, this field encompasses both cosmetic and reconstructive. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) discusses preventing injuries and educating adults, parents, and children about the importance of lawn mower safety in a recent article and points out that many lawn mower-related injuries require a team of physicians from various specialties - plastic surgery, microsurgery, maxillofacial surgery, pediatrics, and orthopedics - to properly repair them. Often, patients must go through difficult reconstructive operations for months, sometimes years, to restore form and function.

San Diego plastic surgeons warn that lawn mowing can be dangerous to the operator as well as those nearby if proper safety precautions aren't taken. Power lawn mowers are dangerous adult tools, but many children, and sometimes adults unfortunately, see them as toys. The ASRM, ASPS, ASMS, AAP and AAOS offer the following tips to help prevent lawn mower-related injuries:

  • Children should be at least 12-years-old before they operate any lawn mower, and at least 16 years old for a ride-on mower.
  • Children should never be passengers on ride-on mowers.
  • Always wear sturdy shoes while mowing - not sandals.
  • Young children should be at a safe distance from the area you are mowing.
  • Pick up stones, toys and debris from the lawn to prevent injuries from flying objects to the face that may necessitate facial surgery such as San Diego rhinoplasty or reconstructive ear surgery. Very often, plastic surgeons see patients who suffer significant facial injuries by items thrown out of mowers like sticks and stones.
  • Always wear eye and hearing protection.
  • Use a mower with a control that stops it from moving forward if the handle is released.
  • Never pull backward or mow in reverse unless absolutely necessary - carefully look for others behind you when you do.
  • Start and refuel mowers outdoors - not in a garage. Refuel with the motor turned off and cool.
  • Blade settings should be set by an adult only.
  • Wait for blades to stop completely before removing the grass catcher, unclogging the discharge chute, or crossing gravel roads. (As a safety feature, some newer models have a blade/brake clutch that stops the blade each time the operator releases the handle.)

To learn more about lawn mower injury prevention, contact your local San Diego cosmetic surgeons who can provide additional information about treating numerous facial injuries caused by lawn mowers, the effects of which can be devastating particularly to children.

Cosmetic Surgery: What To Know Beforehand

San Diego breast augmentation
You've seen it advertised in newspapers, featured on television programs, apparent in the faces of celebrities - cosmetic surgery. It's guaranteed to shave decades off your appearance, right? In some cases, maybe. Cosmetic surgery offers the potential to improve many areas of the body. But as with any surgery, top San Diego cosmetic surgeons remind patients that cosmetic surgery also involves certain risks and limitations.

Plastic surgery aims to change your appearance by altering parts of your body that function normally but whose appearance makes you unhappy. This differs from reconstructive surgery, in which a San Diego plastic surgeon can perform surgical procedures with the goal of improving the appearance and function of body parts affected by congenital defects, injuries and diseases such as cancer. Cosmetic surgery offers choices for making changes in your physical appearance. It reshapes normal body structures, changes appearance and, often, improves self-esteem. If you're dissatisfied with your appearance, you may be interested in cosmetic surgery not only to look better, but also to feel better. Despite possible risks, and though each person's experience is unique, both improvements may be likely after cosmetic surgery.

No studies have conclusively proved that most people can expect to enjoy dramatic improvements in their psychological well-being, however. If you're struggling with depression, for example, cosmetic surgery such as a San Diego breast augmentation procedure is unlikely to relieve it.

When deciding for or against cosmetic surgery, consider the following:

  • Your expectations. Anticipate improvement, not perfection. If you expect cosmetic surgery to turn you into a movie star, you're bound to be disappointed. Also don't count on surgery to save a rocky relationship, gain a promotion or improve your social life.
  • Time and expense. Cosmetic surgery isn't covered by most health insurance. The costs vary depending on the procedure performed and may range from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars. The procedures and your recovery also take time. This varies depending on the procedure. Returning to work may take from one day to several weeks.
  • Potential risks. You must be comfortable with the fact that cosmetic surgery, like any surgery, can be a risk to your health and that the results may not be what you anticipate.
  • Physical and psychological changes. Understand the physical effects that may be part of the healing time as well as how the surgery may affect aspects of your personal and professional life.

While dissatisfaction with results always remains a possibility, the closer you work with your surgeon to establish specific, measurable and achievable goals before surgery, the more likely you are to be satisfied with the results. breast implants San DiegoNew computer technology is making it possible to view the likely outcome of breast augmentation surgery before the procedure is performed. Closer to home in San Diego rhinoplasty patients are able to view engaging and informative 3D videos of procedures they are interested in via The Del Mar Cosmetic Medical Center's plastic and cosmetic online video library. A valuable tool in understanding how a procedure can help patients achieve the look they desire, this innovative multimedia educational program is exclusively endorsed by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

This technology displays results from all angles, giving the patient freedom to choose the sizes of breast implants to place on the 3D model. Therefore, the patient is able to compare and contrast how they might look with a number of different sizes of implants, giving them a better idea of which size they would ultimately like the most. At Dr. Sherman’s San Diego breast augmentation practice, 3D Video Library has been very helpful for patients in understanding realistic cosmetic surgery results.

Leading Factors for Sagging Breasts

A recent study shows that breast feeding is not the most significant cause of breast ptosis, or sagging breasts. The study shows that age, body mass index (BMI), and smoking are more relevant risk factors, in spite of common beliefs that breastfeeding is the main cause.

A common complaint of postpartum San Diego women, drooping breasts are often the main target for plastic surgery. San Diego breast enhancement can help reverse the signs of breast ptosis and reshape the breasts to be fuller and more aesthetically pleasing. Some women opt not to breastfeed after pregnancy due to the thought that it will adversely affect the appearance of the breasts. The study however, serves to correct this common misconception.

The study was published in the September/October 2008 issue of the Aesthetic Surgery Journal and reviewed a number of pre breast surgery patients who had a history of at least one pregnancy. The degree of their breast ptosis was analyzed in correlation to factors including age, number of pregnancies, history of breastfeeding, duration of breastfeeding, BMI, pre-pregnancy cup size, history of smoking, and amount of weight gain during the pregnancy.

The results showed that the greater the age, higher BMI, greater number of pregnancies, larger pre-pregnancy bra cup size, and history of smoking were all very significant factors in the degree of breast ptosis, while breastfeeding, even duration of breastfeeding was not as relevant. So it seems that those nonsmoking post pregnancy women who are younger, of a decent weight, and smaller cup size need not worry as much about breastfeeding in regards to the development of sagging breasts. Others may consider San Diego breast lift surgery if they are dissatisfied with the look of their breasts.

San Diego plastic surgeon Dr. Maurice Sherman of the Del Mar Cosmetic Medical Center suggests first doing research on the type of breast enhancement procedure you are considering. During an in office consultation he can evaluate your individual condition and discuss each procedure in more detail with you, as well as answer any questions you may have. What is Revision Rhinoplasty?

San Diego revision rhinoplasty is a procedure employed when further surgery is required on the nose. This type of nose surgery is often required to repair a botched surgery, or correct irregularities or hide scars form previous surgeries. San Diego rhinoplasty today is much more effective than what it was 10 years ago. Certain technologies employed now were not available years ago, when many people first had nose reshaping surgery. Because of a lack of expertise and outdated surgical techniques, many San Diego nose job patients from over a decade ago have experienced weakening, and mutations of the nasal structures – case in point, Michael Jackson. Think back to when he first got his nose job. It may have suited him for a while, but as time progressed, his nose got weaker, and more deformed-looking. This is exactly the type of situation where revision rhinoplasty comes into practicality.

Some important things to think about when considering revision rhinoplasty in San Diego are how the nose looks now, what exactly is the issue or problems that need to be repaired and if they in fact can be corrected, what kind of scarring is involved, and what the expectations of the patient are.

A San Diego cosmetic surgeon who specializes in revision rhinoplasty will be able to address all these issues. He or she should be specially trained in the field, have much experience, and be able to communicate with you how the procedure will be performed, and what to expect before, during, and after the surgery. Your expectations are key. If satisfaction is not achieved the first time, then more extensive surgery will be required. For example, a patient may bring in a photo of a celebrity and demand an identical nose, and later find that this type of nose does not complement their other features and overall facial aesthetic. It is important to talk with your doctor in order to achieve both satisfying and realistic results.

It is rare that a recent rhinoplasty surgery requires extensive revision work, unless something has gone wrong. Sometimes, patients accidentally cause damage to themselves after the surgery, or are for some reason unsatisfied with the end results. In this case, very small irregularities can be fixed fairly easily and inexpensively on an outpatient basis. More extensive work will require more surgery at more costs. That is why it is important to work with your doctor to get the right results the first time.

Are You a Good Candidate for Rhinoplasty in San Diego?

San Diego rhinoplasty is a fairly common procedure, surgically reshaping the nose for either aesthetic, reconstructive, or functional purposes, or all three. Good candidates for rhinoplasty, or nose surgery, are those who are unhappy with the appearance, proportion, or certain features of their nose in relation to the face. Many people look to San Diego and La Jolla rhinoplasty in order change their nose’s appearance and thus enhance the overall appearance of their face. Common qualities of an “unattractive” nose include a large “hump” or a bulbous tip. Rhinoplasty can remove a hump and narrow and reform the tip and overall shape of the nose. Even the slightest changes to the nose can drastically affect the appearance of the face.
Many people also look to rhinoplasty to correct certain functional problems with their nose. A deviated septum and other breathing problems are often fixed with rhinoplasty in San Diego. Also, patients who had undergone rhinoplasty decades ago, prior to the surgical technologies available today, have suffered from weakening in the structure of the nose, leading to breathing problems and changes in appearance. This has lead to a surgical procedure called revision rhinoplasty. San Diego revision rhinoplasty surgeons use today’s technology in order to correct the flaws in outdated procedures, strengthening the nose’s structure and appearance from the inside out.
Talk to your San Diego cosmetic surgeon about whether you are a good candidate for rhinoplasty surgery. It is important to choose a plastic surgeon who will be able to speak to you on the many facets of the procedure, as well as its risks and side effects. Your surgeon should be able to advise you on the type of nose that will enhance your facial features, as well as give you the nose that you will be happy with. Ask to see before and after photos of the surgeon’s work, and don’t be afraid to discuss his or her medical background and experience. In the end, your expectations and your happiness is what matters, but you should always be able to get input from the professionals.
